Social Media Dev: Broad/MSU
With 1K+ follows on Twitter and 800+ Likes on Facebook a half year after I started managing their accounts in April of 2011, MSU’s new art museum quickly gained ground on a great many other institutions already spread across its campus implementing social media campaigns of their own.
Even growing so fast as to match the MSU Museum’s number of followers, another prominent museum on campus, using little more than word of mouth, a social media display I pieced together then added to the side of the main Website for easy linking from each page, and our email updates.
Through the twittersphere I connected with other prominent local and national institutions, including SFMOMA and the greater arts community as a whole, on several subjects such as current news and events, slowly gaining recognition as a legitimate voice. Beyond pushing reminders to the public, I strived to inform our audience about the projects in development and the artists involved. Occasionally I would mention events from around the city, state and globe, in order to build a core group of supporters who would willingly share our content on a consistent basis.
One of my favorite activities working as their Webmaster was developing content for these social spaces on the fly, such as short videos for our YouTube and Flickr accounts. Some of these were highlights from the construction, sneak peaks at special events, or our preparator building impromptu signage or rear projection contraptions. It is a pleasure knowing that no matter what the future holds for the art museum, I helped set a foundation for others to build upon for years to come.
