Flickr Photography: The Broad @ MSU

When Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum was being constructed, I saw a chance to tie social media presence to a physical entity. Its progress was the perfect subject for establishing a solid connection to our audience. When workers snapped on the metal components of the exterior and installed the polygonal panes of glass, I recorded these moments to be featured content on The Broad’s Flickr and extended presence.

From April ’11 and on I captured the museum transitioning through from a cement foundation, to a metal frame, then finally as the steel plates were installed across each face. Video edited together in iMovie and still photography were both used to log the year’s additions until the project’s culmination with the grand opening in Fall 2012.

My work spanned 500 images, some were used for Michigan State University’s outgoing press kits, a few were picked up by newspapers and blogs, on blogs such as CurbedDetroit, and on March 15, 2012’s issue (page F34) of The New York Times in the Museums section.

As Webmaster, I cannot say any long term project previous to this ever felt greater as an honor than photographing such a modern marvel.
